Guts and glory

Ladies, let's talk about our guts. No, not the six-pack kind - we're talking about the digestive system, the microbiome, the community of microscopic organisms that live in our intestines. It might not be the sexiest topic, but gut health is crucial, especially as we hit our peri-menopause and menopause years.

Why is gut health so important, you ask? Well, for starters, it affects the absorption of all the nutrients we need to stay healthy and vibrant. And if you're anything like me, you don't have time for your body to be missing out on any of those! Plus, a healthy gut can help boost your immune system, reduce inflammation, and even improve your mood.

But here's the thing: as we age, our gut microbiome can get thrown out of whack, thanks to hormonal changes and other factors. And that can lead to a host of unpleasant symptoms, from bloating to constipation to diarrhea (oh joy). So, what can we do to keep our guts happy and healthy?

First off, let's talk about diet. It's not about restriction or deprivation - it's about giving your body what it needs to thrive. Focus on eating a variety of plant-based foods that are rich in fiber, like fruits, veggies, and whole grains. These foods help feed the good bacteria in your gut, which in turn can improve nutrient absorption and reduce inflammation.

Next up, probiotics. These little guys can be a game-changer when it comes to gut health. Look for a high-quality supplement that contains a variety of strains and CFUs (colony-forming units) to help restore balance to your microbiome. And don't forget about prebiotics, the food that helps those probiotics thrive. Prebiotic-rich foods include garlic, onions, leeks, asparagus, bananas, and whole grains.

Staying hydrated is also key to keeping your gut moving smoothly. Aim for at least eight glasses of water a day, and consider sipping on herbal tea or bone broth for extra nourishment.

Finally, let's talk about stress. We all know that stress isn't great for our health, but did you know it can also affect your gut microbiome? That's why it's important to prioritize stress-reducing activities like exercise, meditation, or even just taking a few deep breaths.

So there you have it, ladies - a crash course in gut health. By taking care of your gut, you'll be taking care of your whole self. And trust me, that six-pack might be nice, but a healthy gut is where it's really at!

Now that you know the importance of gut health, it's time to take action! Start by incorporating more gut-friendly foods into your diet, such as fermented foods and high-fiber vegetables. And if you're looking for a supplement to support your gut health, be sure to let me know and I will share what I use that is specially formulated to nourish your gut and improve nutrient absorption.
